Oberstdorf

Oberstdorf is a cosmopolitan ski resort with attractions outside the sport of alpine skiing. It is located in the Allgäu region of the Bavarian Alps and is a quaint skiing and hiking village in southwest Germany.
It has also a worldwide reputation for their ski-jumping competitions and offers a full range of accommodation options.
Oberstdorf is also well-known as a "Kur" resort in the summer, and a number of hotels are specialised on wellness activities.
The skiing itself is extensive, especially for Germany, and is split into three main areas, the two largest and most popular of which being the following:
The principal ski area is the Fellhorn/Kleinwalsertal, located outside the immediate Oberstdorf area around 8 km from the town.
Next to the railway station in the centre of Oberstdorf is a station from where buses frequently connect to the bottom of the Fellhorn cable car.
The runs head from a high bowl on the German side over into the Austrian valley. The Kleinwalsertal is a geographical oddity as this part of Austria can only be reached from Germany. Those with cars may be tempted to seek out some of the other smaller areas further along the valley.
The closer, but smaller, area is the Nebelhorn, which is reached from a cable car on the outskirts of the town. Skiing at the top is in a single bowl and, if the snow conditions are good, runs down to the bottom.
Oberstdorf can be reached fairly easily from Munich and the north via Kempten or Kreuzlingen or from the west via Immenstadt. The routes from Austria and the south are generally smaller roads, while the routes via Reutte and Bregenz are probably the easiest ones to take. Although Munich airport is further away from Oberstdorf than Innsbruck, it is the better choice as the motorway connections are distinctly better. Please keep in mind, that the motorway can be busy during holiday periods. Alternatively to a journey by car there is a regular train service that will get you right into the centre of the town.
