A proving ground for alpinists, mountaineers and skiers from all over the world, Chamonix has more of an authentic alpine flair than resort glitz and glamour. Tucked beneath the shadow of 15,767-foot Mont Blanc, the power and beauty of this area are unmatched.
This France ski vacation location is the oldest ski resort in France, and is really a quaint village of 10,000 people where the tradition of fine skiing combines with the diversities a town this size can provide. Chamonix is situated in the north-westerly part of the Alps, just 15 km (9.3 miles) from the Swiss border via the Col des Montets and 15 km (9.3 miles) from Italy via the Mont-Blanc tunnel. The border of these three countries unites at 3,820 m (12,532 feet) on the summit Mont Dolent. Chamonix and its valley are dominated by the Mont Blanc chain to the south and the Aiguilles Rouges (red peaks) to the north.
The Arve, the main river of the upper Savoy, takes its source at the Col de Balme and flows through the Chamonix valley and on down to Geneva where it joins the Rhône.
