Mount Vesuvius is a volcano east of Naples, Italy. It is the only active volcano on the European mainland but it is not currently erupting. The mountain is best known for its destruction of the city of Pompeii. It is regarded since then as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. Its latest eruption dates back to 1944.
