Galapagos Islands

Description
The island group, known officially as the Arcipiélago de Colón, is made up of 13 major islands, eight smaller ones and 40 named islets. They occupy about 7900 sq km (3080 sq mi). Despite 95 per cent of the landmass being national park - the islands house a human population of some 15,000.
The landscape is barren and volcanic but has a unique haunting beauty, while the clean air and warm seas are home to the islands' renowned bird and marine life, which includes albatrosses, penguins, boobies, turtles, giant tortoises, iguanas, sea lions, whales and dolphins.
