Messel Pit Fossil Site
|

|
The Messel Pit, named after the nearby village bearing the same label, is located about 35 km southeast of Frankfurt, Germany. Although the pit first became known for its wealth of fossils during the turn of the century, it wasn't until the 1970's that serious scientific excavation took place. Large series of lakes, surrounded by lush, sub-tropical forests supported an incredible diversity of life. Shifts in tectonics over the periods, however, leave only the Messel Pit as an image this former, Eocene expanse. Luckily this particular lake bed itself was probably a center point for subsidence from nearby rivers and creeks. The Messel Pit provides the most preserved evidence of Geiseltalian flora and fauna we have yet discovered. While most other sites are lucky to contain partial skeletons, the pit boasts extensive preservation of structural integrity, even going so far as to preserve the fur, feathers, and "skin shadows" of some species.
