Dominica is of relatively recent volcanic origin and topography is characterized by precipitous slopes, deeply incised valleys, fifty fumaroles and hot springs, freshwater lakes, a "boiling lake" and five volcanoes. In fact the island is the most rugged and mountainous in the Caribbean.
