Fiordland National Park

Beschreibung
Created in 1952, Fiordland is the largest national park in New Zealand, and one of the largest in the world, covering an area of 1,200,000 ha (3,000,000 acres). Fiordland National Park is also the largest area of wilderness in New Zealand. There are only three roads in the park (and a single one with public access. Fiordland remained wild because it is a mountainous and extremely rugged land. Altitudes are highest in the north and reach 2746 m. The Park is a combination of deep valleys, sheer rock faces sometimes over 1500 m high, and extremely steep slopes. Both lakes and fiords are in places over 400 m deep, so that the bottom of the lakes is below sea level. Fiordland is submitted to the very high rainfall weather pattern which is characteristic of the west coast of the South Island. Temperatures are mild, at least at low altitude: mean maximum temperature in summer (January) is 18.8 C, against mean minimum temperature of 1.3 C in winter (July).
