Awash National Park is the oldest and most developed wildlife reserve in Ethiopia. The park is located 225 km east of Addis Ababa, featuring the 2,007-m high Fantale Volcano, mineral hot springs, and extraordinary volcanic formations. This natural treasure is bordered by the Awash River and lies 225 km east of Addis Ababa. The Awash River, one of the major rivers of the horn of Africa, waters important agricultural lands in the north of Ethiopia and eventually flows into the wilderness of the Danakil Depression.
Oryx, bat-eared fox, caracal, aardvark, Colobus and green monkeys, klipspringer, leopard, bush-buck, hippopotamus, Soemmering’s, gazelle, cheetah, kudu and almost 400 bird species all live within the park’s 720 sq. km.
Another feature of this park is the Filwoha hot springs. The water of these springs and rivers in the region is 36 degrees Celsius. The unbelievably clear blue pools, surrounded by down palms, invite travelers to wash off the dust.
