Titicaca is the Worlds highest lake lying at 3,810 m above sea level in the Andes Mountains of South America but it’s only the second largest lake in South America. Maracaibo is larger.
A narrow strait, Tiquina, separates the lake into two bodies of water. Titicacas waters are limpid and only slightly salty. Ruins on the shore and on the islands testify previous existence of one of the oldest civilizations. Forty-one Islands rise from Titicanas waters. Some of them are densely populated. There is an indigenous community of some 350 families which continue to live within the traditions of the 14th century, according to the principles of Inca life.
