Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes but still the fourteenth largest in the world. Lake Ontario lies at the base of Niagara Falls. The falls were always an obstacle to navigation into the Upper Lakes. The Basin is largely rural, with many scenic resort areas. A few large urban areas, like Toronto (the capital city) are located at the Canadian shoreline.
