The first underwater park in the U.S., John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, encompasses approximately 180 nautical square kilometres. One of the famous dives in this area includes the "Christ of the Abyss" statue that was donated to the Underwater Society of America by an Italian diving group in 1961 and placed in the park in 1965, dedicated to the marine life of the reefs. Three meters to the hands and seven to it's base, the statue is easily accessible to both divers and snorkelers. It lies in an area of spectacular coral formations directly in front of the shallow reefs of Key Largo Dry Rocks. The warm tropical water hosts thousands of different sea inhabitants, among which are Butterfly fish, Angelfish, Blue Tangs, Scorpionfish, Yellowtail Snapper, Grouper, Squirrel fish, Parrotfish, Green Moray, Hogfish, and Bluehead Wrasse.
