Grand Baie, North Mauritius

|
Formerly a small fishing village on the Northern coast, Grand Bay is nowadays the most famous seaside resort of the island. Surrounded by an emerald green lagoon, Grand Bay has many luxurious hotels. The village has all the essential services like supermarkets, pharmacies, doctors, post office and police station. Moreover, a great number of restaurants, bars and nightclubs can be found in the area. The local climate is tropical, modified by southeast trade winds; there is a warm, dry winter from May to November and a hot, wet, and humid summer from November to May. Cyclones affect the country during November-April. If you decide look for a dive resort in this region of Mauritius, there is one name that stands out;
Whale Rock.
Situated just beyond the outer reef off Pointe aux Canonniers, Whale Rock has a notorious history, as it is here that many ships foundered while entering or leaving the harbours of Grand Baie and Port Louis.
The bones of the ships have either rotted away or have been covered by Nature, because there are no pieces left lying about - only silent ghosts and dispassionate official entries in the annals of Mauritian nautical history remain. Whale rock comprises a series of large black slabs of rock which are at different depths on the drop-off. Visibility is usually good with 25-30 m. Some diving centres divide Whale Rock into three different sites however it can all be done in one dive. There is normally a tidal current which at times can become fairly strong, making this a suitable drift dive. The best dives on this site are 10 days after new moon depending on prevailing weather conditions at the time.
