Andaman Sea

Description Pictures Facts
Magnificent beaches, pulsating cities, ancient temples and charming people is what awaits you in Thailand; making it no exaggeration to say that spellbinding Thailand offers something for everyone. Off the west coast of exotic Thailand and Burma lies what is known as the Andaman Sea. Part of the Indian Ocean, the Andaman Sea is roughly 1,200 km long (north-south) and 650 km wide (east-west). Situated within this huge area is Koh Lanta, located approximately 70 kilometres south of Krabi on the east side of Southern Thailand's Phang Nga Bay. It is 27 kilometres long and parts of the island are still covered by virgin rain forest. The Andaman Sea itself is host to numerous dive spots, some of which can be accessed from several different sites. Therefore, it is not always quite clear which region a particular dive site belongs to. If you decide to dive in Koh Lanta, there are two sites that are absolute must-sees. Hin Daeng (Red Rock) and Hin Muang (Purple Rock), both accessible from Phi Phi Islands as well.

Rated as one of the top dive sites in Thailand, Hin Daeng is completely surrounded by the open sea. Hin Daeng is a pinnacle that emerges from a depth of 50 m (164 ft) and just manages to make it through the surface. Combined with a visibility of often more than 40 m (131 ft) Hin Daeng truly is a diver’s dream site. The pinnacle itself is completely covered with a wide variety of corals, fans and plants and attracts big schools of barracuda, mackerel, snapper and tuna. But the true highlight of the site is the sighting of whale shark, manta and eagle rays, which happens more than anywhere else in Thailand. And if you are still not convinced by what Hin Daeng has to offer, the site is host to bull sharks, grey reef sharks, silver tip sharks and big black tip reef sharks. So if sharks are what you fancy, Hin Daeng is where you have to go.

The second site that should not be missed on a trip to Koh Lanta is Hin Muang. About 200 m (656 ft) long and 15-18 m (49-59 ft) wide with a 25 m (82 ft) wide valley in the middle, this completely submerged reef reminds a little of a huge loaf of bread. The whole reef, except for the valley is covered in colourful anemones, hence its name Purple Rock. The valley is often host octopus and leopard sharks lying around. But besides the profuse marine life that Hin Muang boasts, Mantas are what this dive site is particularly famous for.
