The aubergine is king at this tribute to a very wonderful vegetable in California's Sierra Nevada mountains - the annual Loomis Eggplant Festival. Recipe contests, food, children's activities, arts and crafts, a fun run and a golf tournament all feature.
More than 100 stands offer their wares, including (what else?) special eggplant dishes. One highlight of the festival is the running of the festival's "Egganapolis 500". The eggplant entries are "raced" down a wooden plank in children's wagons.
Established in 1988, the event celebrates Loomis' 100+ years as an agricultural centre.
