Historic Garden Week in Virginia enables visitors to tour over 250 of the area's gardens, homes and historic landmarks. More than 30 different tours are offered during the event, which shows off the state at the peak of its springtime glory.
Known as "America's largest open house", the event raises money to help maintain some real historic treasures and every type of garden is represented, whether it be formal gardens, walled gardens, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, annual and perennial gardens, herb gardens, water gardens or secret gardens.
A number of noteworthy houses are also open to visitors and every venue has its own story to tell. The tour schedules are drawn up in January, when a guidebook is made available featuring full details, or you can check the event's website for details of activities near you.
