Fondly known as the "gumbo capital of the world", it's no surprise that Bridge City celebrates this edible delight with a Gumbo Festival of its very own. Aside from the delicious Gumbo, highlights include live entertainment and a cooking contest.
There's no point going to this one without a healthy appetite. More than 2000 gallons of both seafood and chicken/sausage gumbo is on the menu, together with a variety of other native Louisiana cooking such as jambalaya and New Orleans-style red beans and rice with sausage, as well as hamburgers, hot dogs, onion mums, home-made cakes and candies, funnel cakes and many other delicious surprises.
Other distractions include (of course) a gumbo cooking contest, a 5km (3-mile) fun run across the Huey P Long Bridge and non-stop musical entertainment, featuring Cajun, Zydeco, country, jazz, blues and rock.
