A marathon could be seen as a hellish endurance test, but the City of Los Angeles Marathon always offers a lot more. Professional athletes, walkers and plenty of entertainers join up for the 26.2-mile run.
Scores of bands and performers give the runners added momentum. Medical teams are on hand to provide full support and water stations can be found every mile, some also providing replenishing sports drinks.
The race starts at 5th and Figueroa Streets. Runners pass through the neighbourhoods of Crenshaw, the Miracle Mile, Hancock Park and Koreatown, taking the race to its further point west, before heading back to the finish line in downtown Los Angeles. Here all finishers receive a medal and welcome supplies of water.
If a marathon is too much, then why not try the Emerald Nuts 5K Run/Walk, the Acura LA Bike Tour or simply take it all in - the whole occasion is exhilarating for spectators.
All runners must pre-register. Please visit the marathon website for full details.
