Held on a 700-acre farm near Manchester, Tennessee, the Bonnaroo Festival attracts some of the music world's leading lights and has built up a fanatical following.
First held in 2002, Bonnaroo (or Roo), has been lauded by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 50 moments that changed rock and roll, alongside monumentous events such as Elvis cutting his first record at Sun Studio and the Motown Revue.
The programme is dominated by jam bands, which has lead to some unusual but inspirational live collaborations, and there is also world music, electronica, dance and hip-hop. The festival is similar in attitude to popular music festivals like Woodstock or the Isle of Wight, so leave your prejudices at home as there is plenty of weirdness floating around.
Festival-goers camp in a tented city, so make sure you have everything you need with you - pack sunblock and leave pets at home. Additional activities include classic arcades, an on-site cinema, a silent disco, a comedy club, theatre, a beer festival and a music technology village.
The line-up for 2008 is full of world-class acts such as blues legend BB King, award-winning hip-hop artists Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco, rock behemoths Metallica and cult folk artist Iron & Wine. Also appearing are Rilo Kiley, Broken Social Scene, Jack Johnson, Willie Nelson, M.I.A, Ben Folds and Jose Gonzalez.
Please visit the festival website for full details of the programme and detailed instructions on how to get to the site.
