The Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival is the oldest annual gathering of bluegrass talent in the world. It has its own campground and adjacent Festival Park, including a wooded amphitheatre.
The hillbilly music tradition goes back hundreds of years, but it was Bill Monroe, with his high-mountain tenor and unique mandolin playing, who made bluegrass what it is today. In 1967 he founded the first Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival, called a Big Bluegrass Celebration, bringing his friends together to play the "high lonesome" sound he pioneered.
Today the festival keeps his memory alive with performances by more than 50 of the best bluegrass bands over the eight days of the event. For full programme details, please visit the festival website.
