West Dean Gardens offers chilli tastings, chilli cooking tips and advice on how to cultivate your own chillis during its annual fiesta.
Stars of the show are the peppers themselves. Cooking tips and tastings, Latin rhythms, demonstrations of how to grow the chillis, garden tours, scorching stall holders, sizzling snacks and a children's pepper picture competition all make for a hot but happy day.
From modest beginnings, West Dean's collection of peppers has expanded to include over 250 varieties of these formidable vegetable flamethrowers - truly a horticultural hotspot among the nation's gardens. The collection has species from the benign Bell pepper to the pizza-topping Jalapeno and the blistering Habanero.
