Shetland's fire festivals are part of the islands' Viking heritage, reflecting the pagan desire to defy the winter's long nights with a reminder of the power of light.
So, just a week or so after the shortest day, a burning barrel of tar is dragged through the village of Burravoe, at the south-east corner of the island of Yell, from the Brough Pier to the Public Hall. After the towing there are fireworks, a traditional supper and then music and dancing into the night.
