Scandal has always attracted attention. Besse Surtees' House in Newcastle is no exception. This 16th/17th-century home is a fine example of Jacobean domestic architecture - and scene of Bessie's elopement with John Scott, future Lord Chancellor of England, in 1772.
The well-preserved five-storey house of local lass Bessie is now the regional office of English Heritage. The neighbouring house is also open to visitors. An exhibition illustrating the history of the houses is on the first floor.
