With the hard fruit season in full swing, Highfield Nurseries unveils many delicious varieties of English apple, as well as offering invaluable advice on fruit growing, during its annual Apple Day Celebrations.
England's apple orchards have long contributed to the nation's heritage, and the number of native varieties passes the 400 mark. Varieties such as Egremont Russet, Jonagold, Norfolk Royal and Winter Gem all possess different textures and tastes, suited for a wide range of culinary uses. The fluffiness of a Cox Orange, for example, goes wonderfully in pastries. Once cooked, the smoothness of a Bramley wonderfully complements a pork roast, whereas a Russet can be used for both savoury and sweet dishes.
This apple weekend is a prime opportunity to explore the varieties. Staff are on hand to advise on apple trees from an extensive variety of rootstocks, making it easier for everyone to experience the joys of growing their own fruit. Visitors can taste the freshest of apple juices, learn pruning techniques from the experts and wander through the fruit garden.
