Looming above the A1 in Gateshead is the controversial Angel of the North. Love it or loathe it, British sculptor Antony Gormley's steel statue is one of the most important landmarks in north-east England.

The 20-metre statue stands tall above a former coal mine, where miners worked for 200 years. Apart from the important historical significance, the chosen site can be seen as an expression of our transition from the industrial to the information age.

The Angel looks down from its panoramic hilltop home towards the A1, where around 90,000 drivers a day whizz past. Train passengers on the East Coast main line from London to Edinburgh can see it too.
