Xanthos, along with Letoon, is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Turkey. Xanthos, known as the greatest city for most of Lycian history, was the capital city of the Lycian Federation and was closely linked to Letoon, which was administered by Xanthos. Xanthos was made famous in the Western world during the 19th century by its British discoverer Sir Charles Fellows, who shipped many of the most beautiful Lycian pieces to the British Museum in London.
Xanthos-Letoon has been registered in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list and there is currently a French team excavating Xanthos and Letoon. Archaeological finds date back to the 8th century BC and it has been speculated that the site existed during the Bronze Age. Features of the site include the Harpy Tomb, the Pillar Tomb, the Xanthian Obelisk, the 2nd century AD Amphitheatre and the magnificent mosaics in the Byzantine Basilica.
