Situated between the Greek, Bulgarian and Turkish borders, the city of Edirne is famed for its many mosques and is the site of the annual Kirkpinar oil-wrestling competition. Important buildings here include the Selimiye Mosque, built in the 16th century by the great Turkish architect Mimar Sinan, and Edirne Palace, the "Palace of the Empire" built during the reign of sultan Murat II.

The city was the capital of the Ottoman Empire from 1416 until the conquest of Istanbul by Mehmet II in 1453.
