A true celebration of all things Swiss, the désalpe is the time when dairy herds descend from their summer grazing on high pastures. Crowds turn out in their masses at St Cergue to watch the cows come home.
Heidi fans will feel at home here, as the cows come down before the snow kicks in and parade back to the comfort of their warm stables in the valley. The clanging of cow bells, alpen horns, yodellers and choral singers can be heard for miles, as the herders parade through the streets in colourful costumes accompanied by their decorated cows.
Local farmers put on an impressive spread of Swiss cheeses, Vaud wines and other home-grown specialities to keep the crowds at this extraordinary celebration in high spirits.
