Opened in 2004, the Museum of World Cultures in Gothenburg's Avenyn district houses a remarkable collection of cultural artefacts from all over the world, with diverse collections from south and central America, Asia, Africa and a number of other regions.
Items on display inside this dramatic glass cube include a Sami komse (cradle) in which the baby rested his head on an Arctic fox pelt, a life-size African grave doll and a perfectly-preserved yurt from Kirgizistan, decorated with hand-woven rugs and blankets. Look out for the sandals made from used tyres and oil lamps from old tin cans.
The richest collections are from South and Central America and include 200-year-old Pracas textiles and special items from the Choco Indians in north-western Colombia. The African continent is represented in collections from Central and West Africa. Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East are all well represented by extensive textiles from Malaysia and India and a precious collection of Indonesian kris (short swords).
