The Holy Week ceremonies in Valencia are concentrated around Poblados Marítimos (by the coast) and consist of three main events: the Gathering of the Palms, the Procession of the Holy Burial and the Procession of the Resurrection.
The celebrations here date back to the 15th century and Concordia dels Disciplinats, a strict group who vehemently adhered to religious discipline. Today, guilds from around the city dress up as characters from the Bible, from Pilate and Herod to the Apostles and Holy Women, then parade to the clamour of the bells.
On the Saturday before Easter, the trenca de perols takes place - at midnight the bells anounce the Resurrection and the residents throw earthen cooking pots out of windows and from balconies. Sunday's processions and fiestas are more akin to the rural popular festivities, definitely Catholic but also very lively.
