The town of Ribadavia - capital of Galicia during the 11th century - pays tribute to its medieval history and, in particular, to some of the customs and traditions of its old Jewish community, at the Festa da Istoria.
Highlights include a pantomime and a procession featuring the king, count and nobility of Ribadavia, a large medieval dance pageant, a tournament, an archery contest and an historical Jewish wedding. For younger participants there is also a "living chess game", with people acting as the pieces.
The festival, dating back to the Middle Ages, was interrupted in 1868 and was not resurrected for over 100 years. Since the modern version was reintroduced in 1989 it has grown steadily and now draws more than 20,000 people every year.
