Candelaria stages one of the smaller pre-Lenten festivities in Tenerife, but that's not to say you should overlook it. Taking place well into Lent, it could provide a relaxing tail end to your sojourn on the crazy carnival island.
Of all Spain's carnivals, those of the Canary Islands carry the most kudos, and in Tenerife, the celebrations seem to go on forever. These happy-go-lucky islanders cheerfully ignore that period of obligatory temperance that we know as Lent and continue jigging to the infectious Latin rhythms for a whole week afterwards.
Candelaria, like many of the island's carnival towns (including Arona, Taraconte and Garachicho, among others), copes quite comfortably dealing with some of the overflow from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Revellers, sporting all manner of party armour and ammunition, spill onto the streets to the rhythms of congas, sambas, rumbas and the more traditional Spanish zarzuela. This is also a chance to take in some songs and dances indigenous to the island, along with street acts, concerts, galas and processions.
