Based in the Kosovel and Linhart Halls of Ljubljana's Cankarjev Dom, but also spilling out to the city's other cinemas, including Komuna Cinema, Viè Cinema and Dvor Cinema, the Ljubljana International Film Festival - shortened to LIFFe - was first held in 1990 and continues to bring the best of international cinema to Slovenia.

Just a quick glance at the award winners of recent years gives an indication as to the quality of the festival. There are two main awards: the Golden Reel Award for best film in the Horizons category (guaranteeing the winner a cinema release across Slovenia), which is voted for by the audience, and the Kingfisher Award for most-promising first- or second-time director.

The Golden Reel Awards since 2001 have been won by Dominique Deruddere's Belgian film Everybody Famous and then Peter Mullan's The Magdalene Sisters (2002) and Irish director Aisling Walsh's Song for a Raggy Boy (2003). The Kingfisher Awards have gone to the Slovenian Kruh in mleko (Bread and Milk) directed by Jan Cvitkoviè (2001), Argentine director Juan Villegas for his Sabado (Saturday) in 2002 and last year to Andrej Zvjagincev's acclaimed Russian film The Return.

Submissions for the 15th LIFFe are required by 20 September 2004, after which the full programme is available on the LIFFe website.
