The Kurentovanje Carnival, celebrated every February in Ptuj, is one of the most important traditional events in Slovenia and central Europe.
The festivities open on Saturday with traditional Slovenian carnival masks and costumes, believed to have supernatural powers that are capable of chasing the winter away in favour of springtime. In the evenings the town lights up, with art and theatre performances taking place throughout the streets and squares.
Carnival Sunday culminates with more than 60,000 carnival fans following a lively procession, with participants from Austria, Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Macedonia and Bulgaria.
