The Summer Garden (Letniy Sad) was built at Tsar Peter the Great's personal command in 1704, just a year after the founding of St Petersburg. Nestling between the Fontanka River and the Lebyazhiy Canal as they meet the River Neva, it is still one of the gems of the city. It is also the site of Peter I's first Summer Palace (retained in its original glory), with the gardens packed full of statues - 79 in all, including examples from such Italian masters as Boratta and Bozzazza.
