The State Russian Museum requires no less than four buildings to hold its major collections. It celebrated its centenary in 1998 with a massive refurbishment of its original home, restoring the Mikhailovsky Palace to its former glory. Close to Peter the Great's Summer Garden, that building houses art collections from the 14th to the early 20th centuries. The Marble Palace takes the story up to the present day, including the Rossica Collection of art by foreign artists resident in Russia, while Mikhailovsky Castle has the portrait collection. Finally, the Stroganov Palace holds the Stroganov's collection of icons as well as waxworks.
