Known as the city of 101 islands, St Petersburg stands on the expansive delta of the River Neva and uses various natural and man-made channels as thoroughfares. The downside is that during winter months the canals freeze, so it is only during the summer months (May to late October) that you can take a boat trip under the many bridges to see the majesty of Peter the Great's city, resplendent with its ornately designed museums, churches, cathedrals and monasteries. During the winter you might like to ice-skate on the frozen waters.
