The fourth Cathedral in honour of St Isaac of Dalmatia to be built in St Petersburg was designed by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand and consecrated on 30 May 1858. It was the most important church in the Tsar's capital, and its gold gilded dome still dominates the city's skyline. Although it became a museum in 1931, there are now religious services held on major ecclesiastical days. Visitors can not only enjoy the resplendent architecture, with its red granite columns made up of single blocks, but also climb 300 steps to the colonnade for a panoramic view over the city.
