Novodevichy Cemetery contains many famous graves including those of Krushchev, Yeltsin, Chekhov and Prokofiev. Once used to confine miscreant noble wives, including Peter the Great's first, Evdokia, the adjacent Novodevichy Convent is a classic ensemble of Moscow Baroque architecture.
Novodevichy Cemetery is the most famously populated graveyard in the Russian capital. Bolshevik and Soviet generals are buried here, but it is those with an artistic bent that may make it worth the visit. Look out for composers Shostakovich and Scriabin, novelists Nikolai Gogol and Mikhail Bulgakov, along with men of the stage such as Vladimir Mayakovsky and Konstantin Stanislavsky. Stalin's wife, Nadezhda Allileueva and Russian clown Yuri Nikulin are also residents.
