With a proud 120-year history in its own theatre, the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet (as the Kirov company is once again known) can actually date its antecedents back to 1783. The fabulous façade of the Mariinsky Theatre - currently scheduled for a major renovation - was built in 1860 and first hosted ballet in 1880. Nowadays, under its indefatigable conductor and music director Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky is again as famous for its opera as its ballet programme, including the annual White Nights festival.
