The oldest state museum in Russia, the Kunstkamera recognises its founder Peter the Great, who decreed its foundation in 1704, a year after St Petersburg was founded. It traces, principally, the history and archaeology of the various tribes and civilisations that have lived across Russia's massive landscapes, from chilly Siberia via the Steppes to the exotic regions around the Black Sea. However, within its million artefacts, it includes collections from around the world and remains one of the most absorbing museums to the testaments of mankind in the world.
