The Feast of the Cross is based on an ancient legend and is celebrated in Guarda on Ascension Thursday.
According to tradition, the Romans attempted to destroy a Christian church in the Caramulo mountains, but had not counted on the good neighbourly spirit of the surrounding villagers and were swiftly outnumbered and vanquished. Local people carry dozens of bejewelled crosses through the fields to commemorate the ancient victory. It's a beautiful sight.
