The Sacred Art Museum (Museu de Arte Sacra) in Funchal is one of the island's most important museums. Located in the former bishop's palace, it was founded in 1955 and contains an important collection of Flemish paintings, religious sculptures and gold pieces, dating from 16th-18th centuries. Also see the building's watchtower for a good example of 17th-century Portuguese azulejos, depicting faith, hope and charity.
