The Mercado da Ribeira, by far Lisbon's biggest open food market, is a miniature city of stalls given over to an unbelievable selection of fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and seafood. Enter this hive of activity past stalls sporting hulks of fish and seafood, delectable fruits, herbs and spices, meats and offal and you will either find your appetite very quickly, or lose it very quickly.
This is Lisbon's cheapest food market, so if anything catches your eye, be sure to buy it. There are bound to be a fair share of delicacies that you haven't even seen before. Pay special attention to the seafood, which forms a large part of the Portuguese diet. With a rich gastronomic culture boasting 1001 ways to cook it, there is a lot there for you to try. Be careful not to overdo it (as many tourists do).
