Every September, the residents of Madeira celebrate the harvest of their world-famous wine. At the Madeira Wine Festival in Câmara de Lobos and Funchal, locals use traditional harvesting methods, once employed by the island's first inhabitants.
The festival starts at Câmara de Lobos, with a "live harvest" show. Grapes are collected and squashed by foot in front of a cheering crowd. In the centre of Funchal, light and sound shows take place in honour of the local nectar.
