People surge onto the streets of Funchal to celebrate Madeira's annual carnival. The main street parade takes place on the evening of Carnival Saturday, with plenty of music, dancing and floats, as well as decorations in bars and hotels.
Although Madeira's carnival is one of the most traditional in the country, you may be surprised to know that samba troupes with thousands of members take part as well. Carnival is about fantasy and no figure or costume is out of place.
