This festival in Alvaraes takes place on Ascension Sunday. There are beautiful displays of flowers and locals throw petals onto the pavement as statues of the saints are carried high through the streets. It's a wonderful sight.
The Costa Verde is the stage for some of the most colourful religious celebrations in the country. This beautifully lush part of Portugal stretches from the edge of the mountains to the sea, encircling a vast green amphitheatre.
