Nearly 200 films are screened at cinemas across the Polish capital during the Warsaw International Film Festival. The programme features movies from Poland, as well as countries as far afield as Chile, Taiwan, Iceland and Bulgaria.
The festival is split into seven sections, five of which are competitive. New filmmakers can raise their profiles (and win €5000) by entering their first and second features into the 1-2 Competition. Films from all over the world battle it out in the Warsaw competition, where the Grand Prix is also €5000. There are also Documentary and Shorts categories, as well as a Free Spirit Competition for 'independent, rebellious films'.
In the non-competitive sections, festival-goers can see the latest releases from world-class directors as well as films that deal with current issues. There is even an Audience Award (no cash prize), where viewers vote for their favourite film from the entire festival programme.
