Shared with Slovakia over the border to the south, the Tatra (or Tatras) Mountains form the highest peaks and the western extent of the Carparthian Mountains. 1500kms (900 miles) from its Romanian and Hungarian eastern end as they curve south-east. While Slovakia has the highest peaks (Rysy in Poland is 156 metres lower than its Slovakian counterpart), Poland can claim the largest mountain lakes. For outdoor pursuits, from summer hiking to winter skiing, where Zakapone is known as Poland's "winter capital," the Tatra National Park (founded like its Slovakian counterpart in 1954) and its environs is a must.
