St Dominic's Fair is one of Poland's oldest festivals, established by a Papal Bull in 1260. Over the years it has developed into a lively three-week event, taking over the streets of Gdansk's Old Town and attracting 150,000 visitors daily.
The essence of a traditional fair is kept with over 1000 craftsmen and artists exhibiting their produce, which includes the beautifully hand-crafted amber jewellery particular to this region. The public can also taste pastries during the annual Swieto Chleba (Bread Festival).
The bigger attractions, however, are the cultural events presented during the two weeks, including a brass band festival, street performers, a sports day, exhibitions and a firework show.
Most of the festival's events take place on Dlugi Targ, one of the most splendid of the city's streets, a fitting location for a fair that has lasted some 750 years.
