The National Museum in Gdansk is one of the oldest museums in Poland. Having grown too big for its original building, various collections were moved into separate premises, leaving the main building for the museum's important early art collection.
The museum's main treasure is 15th-century Dutch painter Hans Memling's The Last Judgement triptych, one of the most outstanding masterpieces of the European fine arts in Poland.
The remaining rich collection of early art is arranged in permanent exhibitions: Medieval fine arts in Pomerania, Flemish and Dutch painting in the 17th century, two galleries on Gdansk painting from the 16th to the early 20th centuries, Polish painting in the 19th and early 20th centuries, three galleries devoted to metalwork between the 15th and 19th centuries, furniture making in the 16th to 18th centuries and, finally, early ceramics from the 15th to 20th centuries.
The museum's collection of modern art is displayed at the Abbots Palace in Oliwa, its ethnographical collection at the Abbots Granary in Oliwa, and its photographic collection in the heart of the city.
